CHASE, British Columbia — Seven final-round birdies weren’t enough, so Patrick Weeks made one more. The longtime Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club member birdied the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to beat Brent Pound of Kamloops and win the B.C. Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Talking Rock Golf Course.

“This is amazing,” said Weeks. “I honestly can’t believe it is true. I have been second so many times — [in 2021] at the B.C. Amateur, then I lost in a playoff at Big Sky in the Mid-Am in 2014. This is redemption. I was two shots back the last time the Mid-Am was here at Talking Rock [in 2015] and they called off the final round due to rain. So this is poetic justice.”

CHASE, British Columbia — Nonie Marler led from start to finish at the B.C. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, but that doesn’t mean she didn’t have to overcome a little adversity along the way.

During the final round at Talking Rock Golf Course, Marler was cruising along with a three-shot lead when her tee ball on the par 4 13th hole sailed slightly right, struck the top of a tall tree, and was never seen again. 

No one saw it come down — there’s a good chance it remained up in the tree V and suddenly Marler was under some pressure.

CHASE, British Columbia — Three back-nine birdies propelled Vancouver’s Nonie Marler to an even-par 72 and a four-shot lead after the first round of the B.C. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Talking Rock Golf Course.

Marler, the 2020 B.C. Mid-Am champion who plays out of Marine Drive Golf Club, birdied the 10th, 12th, and 15th holes to finish off her round nicely. Shelly Stouffer, the reigning B.C. Senior Women’s Champion from Nanoose Bay, is alone in second place after opening with a four-over 76.

On the tree-lined fairways of Talking Rock Golf Course, the British Columbia Golf championship season begins in mid-May, as 144 men and women over 25 embark on 54 holes of stroke play competition.

With generous maximum index requirements, the Women’s and Men’s Mid-Amateur/Mid-Master provide an opportunity for players with a range of playing abilities to enjoy the experience of a big-time tournament.

With the Canada Summer Games back on the schedule following its postponement in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, British Columbia Golf is pleased to announce the selection of the coaches who will be in charge of our province’s team heading to Niagara, Ontario, on August 6th-21st.

Golf is being played the second week from August 14th-21st, and will feature two events. Both the team event and individual event will be played at the Legends on the Niagara Battlefield Course in Niagara Falls with four rounds of play.

North Vancouverite Michael Kennedy’s goal to start the day in the final round of the 2021 BC Senior Men’s Championship was just to put in a good performance and have a shot at maybe making the BC Senior Men’s Provincial Team. He most certainly accomplished both... and more.

He started the day 3 shots back of the 36-hole leader and defending BC Senior Men’s Champion Norm Bradley, but a bogey-free 2-under par front nine by Kennedy closed the gap to one and helped set the stage for some real excitement in the home stretch.

KIMBERLEY, British Columbia — John Gallacher recently turned 70 so the fact he shot a four-under 68 to share the lead after the first round of the B.C. Senior Men’s Championship at Bootleg Gap Golf Course was noteworthy. But Gallacher, a two-time B.C. Senior Men’s winner from Burnaby, was more interested in talking about the golf course than his impressive play.

“I think this is the best course we have been at since the Canadian Senior was at Capilano (in 2014) or maybe since I have been a senior,” Gallacher said of Bootleg Gap after his round, which left him tied with Jim Shaw of Sooke and defending champion Norm Bradley of Kelowna.

Shelly Stouffer’s second straight B.C. Senior Women’s Championship title didn’t come quite as easy as the first one. Nothing was easy about the final round for Stouffer, who saw an eight-shot lead evaporate before she rallied to win in dramatic style at Revelstoke Golf Club.

After surrendering the lead late in the round, Stouffer birdied the final two holes to force a playoff and then added another one on the first extra hole to beat six-time champion Jackie Little.

SUMMERLAND, British Columbia — A win is sometimes that much sweeter when it has been preceded by so much hard work and occasional setbacks. Perhaps that’s why Leah John seemed so delighted with her win at the 116th playing of the B.C. Women’s Amateur Championship at Summerland Golf & Country Club.

Like that noted philosopher Ringo Starr, John knows better than most that moments like this one don’t come easy.

The inaugural ‘Cloud’ Blind Golf Championship that took place at various golf courses across the country proved to be well received.

With the hard work of Creston, BC’s Darren Douma, president of the Western Canadian Blind Golf Association and the vice president of Blind Golf Canada, along with Doug Hastie from British Columbia Golf, sight-impaired golfers from BC to Ontario were able to play rounds at a home course or one near their residence and submit scores to be compared on the basis of the course rating.

National Team member Ashton McCulloch may be from Ontario but did not have to travel that far to earn a well-deserved two-shot victory in Campbell River...
